The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) - Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) - is organising the 4th European Conference on Corporate R&D and Innovation (CONCORDi-2013):  

Financing R&D and innovation for corporate growth in the EU: Strategies, drivers and barriers


CONCORDi-2013 will focus on the financial drivers and barriers affecting the link between the innovation and growth of European companies. The financing of firms' R&D and innovation will be dealt with from two main perspectives: the firms' access to external sources of finance and the strategic use of internal sources.

Main topics to be discussed in this context include:

- Financial sources and constraints

- Financial strategies and determinants

- Public policies, policy means and financing facilitators.

The conference will be held at JRC-IPTS premises in Seville (Spain), on 26-27 September, 2013.

L’obiettivo degli Incontri di Artimino è di costituire un’occasione ricorrente di dibattito e approfondimento fra studiosi e operatori, pubblici e privati, sui problemi dello sviluppo locale, anche con l’obiettivo di contribuire alla formazione di professionalità qualificate nel campo della ricerca e all’azione di governo dei territori. Fin dalla prima edizione, nel 1990, un quadro di riferimento concettuale fondamentale per gli Incontri è stato il distretto industriale, col suo laboratorio pratese e toscano. Il quadro si è presto arricchito col riferimento ad altri modelli di sviluppo locale in vari contesti regionali, sia italiani che di altri Paesi.
La seconda serie (2007-2010) degli Incontri di Artimino, iniziata con l’edizione del 2007, ha effettuato un percorso di approfondimento sui temi delle varietà locali e sociali dell’alta tecnologia, degli inventori e dei territori dell’innovazione in Italia, a fronte dalle pressanti sfide economiche e sociali, culturali e istituzionali, della globalizzazione e dell’avanzamento scientifico e tecnologico. A sostegno di tale prospettiva sono stati presentati nelle edizioni 2008, 2009, 2010 tre ricerche originali, che hanno portato alla pubblicazione di altrettanti volumi di “Rapporto sullo Sviluppo Locale”. Particolare attenzione è stata posta anche al ruolo delle politiche di sostegno all’innovazione e ad approfondimenti per la Toscana in ottica comparativa, con l’obiettivo di offrire elementi di valutazione e prospettiva.
La terza serie, programmata per il periodo 2011-2013, intende combinare i filoni di ricerca e dibattito precedenti, orientandoli all’approfondimento e alla discussione del rapporto fra innovazione e trasformazione industriale nei territori europei, a partire dall’Italia contemporanea e con una focalizzazione sulla Toscana e sulle strategie e strutture della policy. Le tendenze contemporanee nella divisione internazionale del lavoro sono segnate da dinamica innovativa accelerata, pervasività delle ricerche scientifiche, sviluppo congiunto di funzioni manifatturiere e terziarie, scomposizione sempre maggiore di componenti dei cicli produttivi manifatturieri, con processi interattivi a scala tendenzialmente globale, competizione all’interno di (e tra) aree integrate al cui interno è cruciale l’esistenza di addensamenti locali fortemente dinamici e socialmente sostenibili.
L’idea di base emersa nell’ultima giornata di discussione di Artimino 2011 è quella di analizzare la nuova geografia economico industriale italiana. Dopo una lunga stagione di studi di caso, che ci ha fornito ampi dettagli sulle caratteristiche tipiche della struttura produttiva italiana e toscana in particolare, vi è stata una fase di relativo scarso interesse per l’analisi del territorio. Il risultato è che, a fronte di una serie di importanti cambiamenti di contesto, la comprensione della morfologia e dell’organizzazione produttiva italiana non ha il supporto di modelli interpretativi aggiornati. Si tratterebbe di capire sia cosa sono oggi i distretti industriali che hanno guidato parte dello sviluppo industriale italiano nella seconda metà del Novecento; e se nuove forse di sviluppo locale industriale stiano radicandosi nei territori, sia come alternativa al “vecchio” sviluppo distrettuale, sia come sua prosecuzione, sia come componente complementare. Per altro verso, l’analisi delle ricadute sulla nuova geografia industriale di politiche (e istituzioni) che agiscono direttamente e indirettamente sui sistemi produttivi e i territori deve essere portata esplicitamente al livello degli effetti di sistema delle politiche, per una prospettiva più consapevole di politiche di sistema.

Presently, we are inviting you to submit a panel proposal. The deadline for panel proposals is

Panel chairs and co-chairs should be from different countries if possible and will be responsible for developing their panel topic, rules of engagement and evaluating submitted abstracts in accordance with the conference deadlines.
Chairs will take responsibility for running the panels during the conference and for communicating with participants before, during (and after) the conference in relation to panel specific agendas and plans. Once accepted, we will be publicizing all the Panels as part of the conference call for papers but please free to use your own networks to publicize your own panels.

Researchers and practitioners are grappling with a number of exciting
challenges and prospects in understanding both the firms that comprise
the creative, artistic and cultural industries and the individuals who
work in related occupations. With this in mind, the editors for this
special issue invite colleagues to submit papers focused around the
creative and cultural industries. While this topic can be broadly
considered, the following themes/questions may provide useful guidance.

    * What are the organizational forms for the creative industries? Do
these differ from other, more traditional industries? What are the
institutional constraints and how do they influence these
organizational forms?
* How does innovation arise in the creative industries? What are the
influences of industry structures, institutional constraints, and
organizational forms on the generation of innovation in the
creative industries?
* What are the similarities and differences among the creative and
cultural industries?
* How has the distribution of creativity changed within the urban
* How can/should performance be measured in these industries? And,
what explains performance differences among and within these
* What is responsible for the increasing incidence of particular
organizational forms in these industries; such as clusters;
networks; inter-firm projects; and online communities?
* How is the economic performance of institutions affected by issues
such as property right regimes; open source development,
industrial/science/regional policies; and social capital/social
* How can we move to a “creative society” which fully harnesses the
creative potential of everyone?
* Explanations and examinations of the relationships between the
“new” cultural and creative industries and the “old” traditional
* What are the relationships between globalization and the shift to
a creativity-based economy?
* Examples or specific case studies that demonstrate or examine the
organization, connections, relationships, and inter-relatedness of
individuals and/or firms within a creative or cultural cluster.

As creativity becomes increasingly discussed in the economic debates, we
must further push ourselves to define the themes, terms and
methodologies that are part and parcel of our understanding and
conceptualization of industrial organization, innovation processes, and
influence on innovation. This special issue hopes to begin to unpack
these issues and instigate further research and debate on this timely

Anyone who is considering a submission for this special issue is also
invited to submit an application to the Martin Prosperity Institute’s
2009 “Experience the Creativity” Conference to be held June 23 to June
25, 2009 in Toronto. The conference will provide an opportunity for
accepted author(s) to present their research and get feedback on results
prior to final submission of their paper for this special issue.
Inclusion in the special issue is not conditional on participation
to the conference.

The Economics Research Unit of the Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER) will hold its 3rd International Symposium in Athens, Greece, August 4-7, 2008. There are two types of registration fees. First, a simple registration fee of 250 euro, covering access to all sessions, 2 lunches, coffee breaks and conference material. *School Objectives*

The course will introduce statistical methods and techniques required
for the analysis of longitudinal data and for managing missing data
problems. In the first three days of the school participants will learn
how to apply methods for data which varies both across units and over
time; these include models for "panel" data, "time-series
cross-sectional" data, and the like. Topics will include fixed- and
random-effects models, GLS-based approaches to panel data, GEE models,
random coefficient models and dynamic models with lagged dependent
variables. Linear, logistic as well as count data models will be
covered. The last two days will be devoted to methods and techniques for
handling missing data. Participants will learn how to apply
state-of-the-art maximum likelihood and multiple imputation techniques
in order to address problems that cannot be reliably solved with
traditional approaches like listwise deletion or regression imputation.
These new methods for handling missing data have been around for at
least a decade, but have only become practical in the last few years
with the introduction of widely available and user friendly software.
While underlying theory will be thoroughly discussed, the greatest
emphasis will be on application and interpretation of models and results
(see full program for further details). Participants are therefore
strongly encouraged to bring their own datasets for analysis. The
computer statistical packages SAS and AMOS will be used extensively for
data analysis.


Paul Allison is Professor and Chair of Sociology at the University of
Pennsylvania, where he teaches graduate methods and statistics. He is
widely recognized as an extraordinarily effective teacher of statistical
methods who can reach students with highly diverse backgrounds and
expertise. Allison is the author of many statistical books sold
worldwide such as /Fixed Effects Regression Methods for Longitudinal
Data Using SAS/ (SAS Institute 2005), /Missing Data/ (Sage 2001),
/Logistic Regression Using SAS®: Theory and Application/ (SAS Institute
1999), /Multiple Regression: A Primer/ (Pine Forge 1999), /Survival
Analysis Using SAS®: A Practical Guide/ (SAS Institute 1995), /Event
History Analysis/ (Sage 1984), and numerous articles on regression
analysis, log-linear analysis, logit analysis, latent variable models,
missing data, and inequality measures. A former Guggenheim Fellow, he is
also on the editorial board of Sociological Methods and Research. In
2001 he received the Paul Lazarsfeld Memorial Award for Distinguished
Contributions to Sociological Methodology.


Participants should enter this workshop with an active working knowledge
of the topics covered in a standard course in /Regression Analysis./ A
familiarity with the basic chi-square test for two-way contingency
tables and elementary regression and ANOVA is also presumed.

Participants will receive a 100-page manual containing detailed lecture
notes (with equations and graphics), examples of computer printout, and
many other useful features. This document frees participants from the
distracting task of note taking. Participants may also want to refer to
Professor Allison's books, /Fixed Effects Regression Methods for
Longitudinal Data Using SAS/ (SAS Institute 2005) and /Missing Data/
(Sage 2001). The books are optional.

*Application procedure *

Deadline for applications is May 15^th 2007. A complete application
package should include the following items:

· A CV indicating nationality, date and place of birth, current
affiliation and position.

· Doctoral students are required to specify the title of the doctoral
program and the year in which they are currently enrolled.

· A statement (no longer than 1 page) that describes (i) the current
research activities of the applicant and (ii) his/her broad research

All applications will be accepted up to the limit of 20. In case of more
than 20 applications the following criteria will be used for selection:
(1) preference for academic researchers in social sciences; (2)
preference for PhD students and junior researchers with a basic training
in statistics; (3) relevance of the School to the applicant's research
program; (4) date of application. Applicants selected out in the first
step of the process will be included in a waiting list and possibly

*A Course on Modern Methods for Handling Missing Data (2 Days)*


Conventional methods for missing data, like listwise deletion or
regression imputation, are prone to three serious problems:

    * Inefficient use of the available information, leading to low power
      and Type II errors.
    * Biased estimates of standard errors, leading to incorrect p-values.
    * Biased parameter estimates, due to failure to adjust for
      selectivity in missing data.

More accurate and reliable results can be obtained with maximum
likelihood or multiple imputation.

These new methods for handling missing data have been around for at
least a decade, but have only become practical in the last few years
with the introduction of widely available and user friendly software.
Maximum likelihood and multiple imputation have very similar statistical
properties. If the assumptions are met, they are approximately unbiased
and efficient--that is, they have minimum sampling variance. What's
remarkable is that these newer methods depend on less demanding
assumptions than those required for conventional methods for handling
missing data. At present, maximum likelihood is best suited for linear
models or log-linear models for contingency tables. Multiple imputation,
on the other hand, can be used for virtually any statistical problem.

This course will cover the theory and practice of both maximum
likelihood and multiple imputation. Maximum likelihood for linear models
will be demonstrated with Amos, a software package designed for
estimating structural equation models with latent variables. Multiple
imputation will be demonstrated with two new SAS procedures (PROC MI and
PROC MIANALYZE) and two Stata commands (ICE and MICOMBINE).
